KLEO

Read the KLEO Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hi I'm KLEO a nineteen-year-old dark-pop artist from Glasgow, Scotland! (Which I often refer to as Synth City!) I started performing as a singer songwriter at the age of fourteen, at local open mics and then progressed to festivals such as The Wickerman Festival and Youth Beatz. At the start of 2016 I took a year out of performing to arm myself with a stage name, and write and record a brand new dark pop EP – "KRYSTALLINE" with producer Marcus Wright. Now I'm coming back with three new tracks – (produced by Lewis Gardiner) CAMEO, UKIYO & WASTED ON YOUTH.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

As soon as I heard Lana Del Rey, I immediately fell in love with her sound and I would say the things that she writes about and her wonderful unique sound definitely influences me. I am also inspired by Halsey who is a true gem in the music community and a huge inspiration to me and many others as someone with mental health difficulties.
I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Spice Girls and Fleetwood Mac – I believe I still take influence from them all on a daily basis even if I'm not listening to their music as regularly as I once did.

What´s new right now?

At the moment I have 3 brand new – unreleased – tracks that I can't wait to share with everyone. I feel like they really reflect who I am as an artist. I am including and exclusive first listen to these tracks here for everyone to get a taste for what is to come!

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

I would say mix things up. If you are used to writing one way – say starting with chords then singing over the top – trying the complete opposite. Or try something completely different all together! I like to look at photographs and try to write songs about what I see on the photograph: the mood, situation etc. I go for long walks and take note of everything I see that interests me. I try and learn something new about production everyday that keeps me interested and gives me a new technique to add to the things that I can do and draw inspiration from the next time.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Artists often struggle with perfectionism – I know I do. And I am almost never happy with my work and spend hours and hours stressing over it. I think learning to aim for less than perfect is a good start and then learning to become comfortable with what you make a good second. In my opinion people should take a step back from their work after a few days at it and breathe for a while. It's okay to be a human for a day or rather than an artist constantly.
