Lady Jaye! (NZ)

Read the Lady Jaye! (NZ) Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hello Ladies and Gents,
My name is Lady Jaye! I am currently 25 years old, and I live in New Zealand. I entered the music scene in 2013. I was self taught, downloaded Virtual DJ and watched some YouTube tutorials on how to use it. Pretty basic stuff really. I instantly became so attached to the software, that I asked a friend if I could use his mixer and speakers to record some stuff. He then recommended to me that I enter a DJ competition, that was based out where I was located. The DJ competition was judged by no other than Mount Eden Dubstep's DJ Overkill. I ended up entering the comp going up against people who had been DJing a lot longer than I had been, and whom had a lot more experience than I did. I worked extremely hard, day in and day out to provide the best 30 minute set ever! And it was my first time DJing in public in front of a crowd of people. It was the most exciting, mind blowing experience I had ever encountered. I placed second place in the competition, and was offered monthly sets every Saturday for 7 months. I was also sponsored by Triple Rock Vodka, whom is the exact same friend who had recommended that I enter the competition in the first place. I worked along side him, as he DJ's as well. Since 2013, I had become a household name, I was being talked about on student radios, and got loads of gigs and events. I even judged a karaoke competition as well, which was awesome and so much fun. I loved seeing and hearing the amount of raw talent, that we have. I went to MAINZ [Music And Audio Institute of New Zealand], and did a 4 week beginners course to DJing. I learnt how to use vinyl, and how to scratch, without computers, then I learnt how to use vinyl with computer software such as Serato. I enjoyed it so much, wasn't a big fan of scratching, but vinyl is easy to do, but at the same time you have to be persistent and patient with it. I then got to play with the big boys toys! We were each placed in an individual soundproof room, and left to our own devices for 2 hours. I got to use a NS7 DJ Controller, with Serato. It was the best 2 hours of my life, and each night out of those four weeks that I attended this course, I couldn't wait to get into that individual room and record music on this amazing DJ Controller. I have met some pretty amazing people throughout my journey, I have DJ'd for some huge artists, doing opening sets and after parties to VIP parties for people such as Mayavana, Macklemoore, Bohemia, and even Lil Jon.

I have learnt how to use CDJ'S with USB connection, I did struggle with it a little bit as I'm so use to using my laptop. But I made it through my 3 hour set flawlessly and had everyone dancing and requesting songs and photos. The best part about DJing is seeing everyone happy and enjoying themselves.I can enjoy myself when I know everyone else is enjoying them selves and the staff and people are happy, I go crazy when I'm up in the booth, dancing and jumping around, interacting with the crowd from the youngsters to the oldies! So from being a bedroom DJ in 2013, to now being a passionate and creative DJ in 2018, I have learnt so much over the past years, and have gained so much knowledge and experiences that I am extremely grateful for everything that has been given to me. It wasn't easy, it wasn't just given to me on a golden platter. I had to practice hard, I couldn't make mistakes, and If I did I had to know how to fix them extremely fast! I have made copious amounts of mix-tapes, mashups, bootlegs and all that jazz and put them all on SoundCloud, YouTube, Hearthis, MixCloud etc, I have even done guest mixes with other DJ's from all over the world online, and had them team up with me and be a guest for me as well. And in 2015 I self taught myself how to produce music, once again I downloaded software such as FL Pro Studio and watched YouTube tutorials, and from there got into producing music as well. I prefer the DJ side of things more because I'm out and about, playing music and making people and getting paid for it. This is my best work I have done by far when it comes to Production – https://soundcloud.com/dj-lady-jaye/lady-jaye-this-is-how-we-do-it ?
You can also check out the copious amounts of mix-tapes I have done and enjoyed doing, most of them are Live recordings.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I unfortunately haven't met any of my influences, but many of them follow me on Twitter, SoundCloud, and Instagram. Which is so exciting, I talk to most of them, and I gain their trust and permission to use their music. Which is awesome! Most of my influences, haven't really changed, more so I've gained more people that I look up to and whom inspire me to be the best I can. My taste in music isn't stuck to just one genre, I am open to basically everything. I like to open myself up to other genres, as I find that sticking to one genre and DJing for years gets boring, and that's why I open myself up to everything so that I have better opportunity given to me in my DJ career.

What´s new right now?

I have a brand new track out that I have finished producing, and had it professionally mastered on LANDR. I am exceptionally proud of myself and of the track itself. I have a few podcasts coming out as well. Currently don't have any live gigs or events, but once I do my fans will be the first to know! I love to gain new fans, and followers and I love to be the one to inspire them to open their minds and to achieve their goals, as the world is your oyster as my mother always told me growing up – what ever you set your mind to, you can do it. If you believe you can, you can. If you see yourself achieving, then you will achieve. Wise words from a wise lady! Be sure to follow me on the links below, and flick me a message – I love to befriend my fans so they can get to know me more and I can get to know them, and take up suggestions of what they are into for future uploads and or events.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My biggest mistake, was uploading music that I thought was good. But when I listen back to those tracks and or mixes, they are absolutely terrible and I am so lucky that I have improved on my production and or mixing techniques. My tip would be that you only upload something online or at a gig if you are truly proud of it, possibly share it with a friend who someone whom you know in the music industry and get advice and tips off them just to be 100% sure that it is up to scratch and the best quality possible.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My biggest challenge is my mental health statue. I haven't quite overcome it as of yet, but I can say that music has definitely saved me in a way, and been a huge distraction. I still struggle with my mental health on a daily basis but I try to not let it define who I am as a person.
