M.U.T.T. (Music Used To Transcend)

Read the M.U.T.T. (Music Used To Transcend) Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hi, I'm M.U.T.T. which stands for Music Used To Transcend. I'm a 36 year old guy from Ghana, living in Chicago. I began writing rhymes when I was 14 and started sampling and making beats when I was 16. I still rhyme but I produce my own music now without samples. I would describe my music as electronic hip-hop with a cinematic edge. I have put out two albums so far – 'The Force Aching' and 'Nothing Is Sacred'.

You can check out a track off 'Nothing Is Sacred' here:

Besides music, I love chicken wings, salted cashews, being in nature and working out.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My initial influence was 90s era hip-hop – the golden era. My first artist I fell in love with was Bone Thugs N' Harmony then I got into Wu-Tang, AZ, Company Flow, Mobb Deep, Gang Starr, DOOM etc. At 16, I developed a passion for movies and with that came an interest in movie scores. I found them to be very dynamic, rich with movement and bursting with emotion. At that point, I came up with the idea that I wanted my beats to be reminiscent of a movie score. I wanted it to sound cinematic.

Once I came to America, I started absorbing a wider range of influences since I had access to the internet and met people who listened to other kinds of music besides hip-hop. I started getting into trip-hop, house, electronica, grunge, prog rock, lounge, movie soundtracks and downtempo chillout music. My major influences at this point where Bjork, Portishead, Chris Cornell, Nine Inch Nails, Maynard Keenan James and the Hotel Costes compilations.

Since graduating college and getting deeper into the life of a musician, my influences continued to change. I started getting into more ambient and more folk music. At this point, I was being influenced by Philip Glass, Jon Hopkins. I also absorbed a lot of dubstep and post-dubstep – Rusko, Joker, Kahn, Phaeleh.

My most recent big influence has been the work of Beach House.

What´s new right now?

Currently, I'm getting ready to record vocals for my third album while producing a record for my friend HANK. After that I plan to put out an instrumental album. Then I will take time to focus more on my production work and doing more shows.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I'm a huge fan of Beach House. I read a review for Bloom then went back and listened to all their stuff.

I just love that they have such a unique sound and it takes me to another place. It is a world in of itself.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

My biggest mistake was not taking my craft seriously.

My tip would be to treat it like a sport – practice for the big game and study tapes of the games.
