Our Interview with Newcomer: Una Mey from Canada

Read the Una Mey Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Una Mey, I’m a 21 year old artist based out of Vancouver, British Columbia.
For those of you who don’t know Vancouver, it’s the perfect balance of city and nature. It’s a cultured city, with a quaint but loyal arts community. I’ve always been an artist. Whether it was music, drawing, or literature, anything creative was up my alley. I grew up in a small town just outside of Vancouver, itching to move away and experience the “big city” dream. At 17 years old I moved out on my own, worked a day job, and busked downtown on my time off. I remember days where I stood in the rain and played my guitar with no amp and no mic, (probably hardly audible) observing seas of people walking by without taking any notice in me. It didn’t stop me from heading downtown every week. After saving up some money and doing some travelling, I moved to a different part of the city and stopped busking. I moved on from my acoustic roots and took an interest in more electronic influences. I now create melody driven music, usually with a somber feel. Whether it’s acoustic or electronic, music has always been an outlet for me to express my weakest moments. I hope when people listen to my tracks they feel something like I did when I wrote it. How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I find myself more and more influenced by vocalists like Lana Del Rey, Kali Uchis, and SZA, as I love feminine vocals combined with a darker or edgy undertone. The instrumentation I gravitate towards is generally either lofi hip hop or downtempo electronic. I’ve always admired producers like James Blake, Dream Koala, and TomppaBeats.
My taste has definitely changed over time. When I first started taking an interest in music I loved anything acoustic. I played guitar consistently for about 5 years, until I found myself bored and not wanting to pursue the skill any further. Taking a break from guitar and putting my focus into my vocals definitely opened a doorway to a whole other realm of music for me. Being able to work with incredible producers, I’m now able to create exactly what I envision, and I’m able to explore so many more creative options when it comes to my own tracks.

What´s new right now?

Now that winter is here, I’ve tucked myself away to focus on some huge projects. I’ve spent a lot of time doing collaborations and features this year, and I’m ready to put my full energy into my own work. I’m currently in the beginning process of a solo EP. I’m hoping this debut project will really show people more of who I am as an artist and as a person. Alongside my solo project, I am in the midst of working on ‘U C ME’, my collaborative project with my boyfriend, who is a producer. We released our debut EP, “Orchids”, back in August 2017, when we found ourselves constantly working together on music, photoshoots, music videos and more. Since our successful release of “Orchids”, we have released one single, with many more lined up for the future. Big things are coming for 2018.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

When I started making music, although the passion was there, I had a lot of doubt. Where I am now musically, I could have been there a couple years ago if I started sooner and committed more. To someone who is starting out I would tell them to go all in. If music is something you want you really need to pursue it full force. It’s inevitable that you’re going to have bumps in the road, but if you believe in yourself, and you have a vision, you have way more chance of success.
