Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hey y’all!
It’s pronounced /nice-uh/

My name is Ananya and I am a storyteller-singer-songwriter from India, currently based in London.
I was raised by an awesome (single) military mom who taught me that it’s okay to feel too much.
So I started to make music – in hopes that I can make you feel something as well.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Over the past few years I’ve had people try to place different genre-specific labels on my music : indie-jazz, neo-soul, acoustic-pop and anything beyond and in between. But I prefer not to be boxed in.
I am involved and interested in everything from alternative RnB/funk, world-folk to jazz-hop, french touch and lo-fi.
(The first band I was ever involved in was actually a metal band, back home in New Delhi!)
Personally, I’ve adored the music of Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu and that can sometimes be seen in my music.

In some ways ‘Fusion’ would be the best word I can think of, as I am constantly trying to blend together my different cultural identities and influences in order tell you the stories I think are worth telling – about issues that effect us collectively.
Currently, I’m hoping to incorporate a more electronic sound as I’m truly fascinated by some of the music I’ve heard that’s been created using non-traditional instruments.

What´s new right now?

I recently released my first single ‘Petunia’ on International Women’s Day – 8th March.
It is a jazz-fusion track that aims to explore the issue of cultural suppression of sexuality amongst a myriad of different issues related to the level of autonomy women (cis or trans) have regarding their bodies, lives and sexuality.
Check it out here:

Being able to collaborate with such talented musicians and artists in order to get this song out was such an exhilarating process. Apart from the music, the artwork for the track took a lot of thought, debates and effort as I wanted it to truly represent what the track says, before anyone even hears it. I’m currently working on a blog post talking more about the need for the message this song has.
I’m also opening the song up for remixes in a bunch of different styles and genres and am incredibly excited to hear what other people make of the track!

he song is available on all digital streaming platforms and stores (Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Tidal etc) and there is a link at the end of this interview which will take you to the same.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

I was born and raised in India.
Although, I was encouraged to develop my music as a hobby – it was made very clear to me that music was never something that I would be allowed to consider as a potential career path or profession.
After finishing high-school I moved to the United States on an International Scholars Scholarship to study Neuroscience and over the course of two years, being diagnosed with depression and countless difficult conversations, I ended up moving to London in October 2017 – a place I had no family or friends- to study and make as much music as I can.

My biggest challenge comes from my mental health which I’ve tried to make a priority. Like water, it ebbs and flows. Some days it’s harder and I’m just grateful to stay afloat and somedays I feel like I’m swimming with the tide. Moving to a new country and trying to make my place and find my tribe from scratch doesn’t make it easy but I’ve done it before and I’m determined to make the most of this opportunity I have to work on my art and myself.
