Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

I grew up in sunny Johannesburg, South Africa with a strong Italian/Sicilian heritage. After leaving school I studied screen acting as my major and music/scoring as a side subject. It was through the scoring I realised I had the ability to create music. I’ve always loved music but there was this feeling that ignited my very being whilst creating it. A true connection to something outside the physical realm. After leaving college I had a family tragedy and left my passion behind to help out at our family business. No matter how successful I became I was never satisfied as I knew I had to pursue music. I decided to move to London and studied at Point Blank, then worked on this collection in the studio. I was lucky enough to have the closest people in my life also be incredible vocalists. So we collaborated on the collection over 4 years whilst in the process of learning.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I grew up listening to jazz classics, Hip-Hop, RnB and everything in between. At the age of 13 my mother introduced me to deep/soul house music and I fell in love. My biggest influences come from the House movement in South Africa. Everything surrounded House Music, every get together, every party and every car drive to and from school. My influences have not changed yet broadened across all genres. Anything that makes me feel something and has truth translates into inspiration.

What´s new right now?

My latest single is set for release on the 5th of July. I am not yet gigging but am in the process of producing the next collection and gearing up for live performances.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

I think the biggest set back has always been self belief. The doubt that lingers, the procrastination that postpones and the constant changing of work. I don’t think their are mistakes, only lessons to be learnt. The biggest challenge for me was finding a mixing/mastering engineer I trusted and that had the same vision of the sound I wanted. I went to the so called best in the industry and spent a fortune for mixes/masters that I did not like and have since reworked with my current engineer. I would recommend for anyone starting in the industry to source people they like, that like their music and support their sound not try change it into something that the radio requires.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My biggest challenge at the moment is getting my music heard. I’m a self releasing producer/artist and have no backing other than my direct support group. I’ve taken the initiative to invest in a great PR company and so far am happy with their reach.

How do you personally discover new music?

Spotify has been the biggest way of recent for me to discover new music and artists. Their algorithms have a way of perfectly suggesting music within my taste. I also follow a few blogs and have selected friends who share great new music with me. Previously all new music was sourced through Beatport which is an incredible platform.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

“I love sharing new music/ artists with people. Initially it’s word of mouth- I send links to my friends and share away. I’ve recently started sharing new music through my insta stories – with some kind of background images/ video that links to my interpretation of the music.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Listening to lots of different music across all genres. To loose comparative listening, to trust your intuition and mostly to be free with your creation- it is an extension of you so it shouldn’t sound like everything else out there. I often listen to instrumental tracks which birth melodies or lyrics into my mind. I then begin creating from those lyrics/melodies.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

I spend ages changing everything I had done, trying new techniques, plug-ins and eventually the songs became tired. I had a very short time line to finish up this collection, “Everlasting Deep” which allowed me to finish up. So in essence
a timeline helped, belief in what I had created and realising it would never be perfect.
