Olivier van Holten

Read the Olivier van Holten Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Olivier van Holten and im an electronic music producer. Im currently doing a lot of work as a ghost producer which means I make tracks for other artists to release as their own for various reasons. Besides this I make underground house, techno and deep house (leftfield) as wel as electronica, lounge/chillout that is often used or custom made for fashion shows, youtube vlogs etc.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

Growing up I listened to many different genres and artists, such as Miles Davis, The Prodigy, Fela Kuti, Underworld, Tom Zé & Joao Gilberto to name a few that stood out to me.
However when I started producing it was mainly house and techno, it was only until a few years ago that I started to draw inspiration from my ''roots'' so to say.
I do enjoy listening to a lot of different things including hip-hop, jazz, electronica and sometimes classical music and I even listen to old Henry Manchini soundtracks or scores in my car when im alone and have a long drive, usually at night.

What´s new right now?

For this year I would like to attract some new and upcoming talent to release music on my own label that is called ''Cap City Beats'' Im mainly looking for underground or leftfield sounding house, deep-house and techno. Other than that I am working on a few new releases under my newer ''Van Holten'' alias, but the goal is to keep things fairly underground.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

Make music that you enjoy making and listening to. I make music for other people that I dont necessarily like (the music I mean) and it really kills your creativity sometimes. For me thats part of the gig, however if youre making music you don't like just for the money or whatever youre probably not going to last long as an artist.

Do you have good promotion tips for other musicians?

For me nót promoting my music is in fact promoting my music. When you have a decent release that people like to own and play but its kind of hard to find it, it makes it just that more sought after because it stays exclusive and cool that way.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My biggest challenge is always to make productions that im 100% happy with, its not an easy thing to do as you are your own worst critic. The only thing to overcome is to just find inspiration and keep going at it.

Once you discovered new music, do you tell others about the new music/artist you discovered? If yes, how exactly?

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Experiment as much as you can. Watch youtube clips from other producers etc. Try different plugins or hardware synths but really learn the ones that you like! Or if sampling is your main skill than finetune that and experiment with how you sample and different kinds of samples.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Ask yourself first why arent you finishing the track? Is it because you don't like it anymore? Maybe thats because you played it a lot for the past few days and you got tired of it: in that case leave the project be for about a week and then return to it, if its still shit, leave it. If the vibe is back finish it.
When its because you think youre missing a few elements, just analyze similar tracks that you like to gather ideas on how to finish your own track. Maybe that final touch of a high string or humming sound is enough!

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

I don't really have a plan or goal at all, but ideally I would like put out a few good releases and play a nice set here and there.
