Read the Soulcate E-Phife Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hey there! I'm Soulcat E-Phife, a black female DJ, Producer and Rapper/MC from Dominican Republic, living in Austria, Europe since my early days. I was born in 1986. After my first trip to New York seven years ago, where I visited some family, I moved to Vienna (Austria's Capital City) and became active in the local Hip Hop/Jazz Scene. Eventually some fans and friends started calling me "Soulcat" – I later added the E5, short for my real name (Emily). I produce beats and work as a professional Recording Artist, Performer and Hip Hop & House DJ all over the country as well as internationally. I've also guest-appeared on the 2012 german Hip Hop Album "State of Flavor" by the Hip Hop Group "Sendemast" (Hamburg) as well as the "Sofa Surfers" 2015 double LP called "Scrambles, Anthems & Odysseys". Among many others, I've also worked with german Beatmaker Figub Brazlevic (Berlin), who's also produced female Hip Hop artists like Gavlyn or Reverie. A few years ago I've also performed at Senegal's biggest Hip Hop Festival "Festa2H" alongside Akua Naru and many other great Hip Hop Artists.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

My influences mostly come from the greatest who did it like J-Dilla, the Wu Tang Clan, female Rappers like Heather B, Apani B Fly, Bahamadia or "Lefteye" Lopez. I also admire female producers like Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson or Tokimonsta. Many describe my sound to be 90's Hip Hop inspired and I deem it the truth, although I as well love me some futuristic Beats and new styles of Rap/HipHop now and then. I started exploring Jazz music at the age of 16 and even founded two bands on my own back in the days. I was playing the drums at first but then quickly went on to writing the songs and interpreting them. In my early twenties I went from playing instruments in live bands to working the beatmachines and learning programs like Logic. I feel like my sound has changed over the years as I've started with rather jazzy and soul-drenched songs in the beginning of my career but then went more into the realm of the Boombap.

What´s new right now?

I have a new self-produced single called "Never show love" which actually exists in two versions. The one that's currently available for listening is my self-produced joint, whereas the Remix by Mono:Massive, a great beatmaker & producer from Austria (DuzzDownSan), will headline with a High Quality Music Video and is available digitally as well as a special edition 7" vinyl for collectors and vinyl lovers. Pre-Order started the 9th of February, Official Release of both Versions will be the 26th Feb.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

I'd probably say it's J-Dilla and Kendrick Lamar! I think everyone who knows about J-Dilla understands – I've collected everything he made and put out since I ever heard of him. Kendrick Lamar is a great Rapper but I guess I admire his choice of beats and all together the way he puts his songs together. Whereas Black Thought from the Roots wins for me when it comes to spitting Freestyles! I've also been a big fan of Yasiin Bey formerly known as Mos Def.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

I guess the biggest mistake was not taking all the chances. At some point in life I was very pessimistic or unprepared, I felt shook by some unfortunate happenings in my life and didn't really see all opportunities lying before my eyes. But I'm glad I had friends and family always pushing me forward and rewarding me with trust and love along the way, so I could become more "effective" in my actions and determined to change something. My tip is to always keep striving and never listen to haters, even if it's someone out your closest circles. But also take constructive critique and try to better yourself every single day.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

I guess there's too. Moving away from where I lived before I moved to the big city resulted in me spending lesser time with my daughter which ultimately lead to her living with her father and some other problems. Although I know she is well and has everything she needs to grow up to be a healthy individual I miss her a lot. The second thing is I'm more than glad the music helped me to get out of money issues and financial problems. I had to work many jobs to make my life like most people do and now life for me is starting to become more fun and meaningful.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Listen to other artists that came before you, and sometime even waaaaay before. Don't limit yourself to only one style of music, try to be open for other sounds as well. Sometimes I listen to some funky Jazz or Soul and freak out over a guitar lick or a drum groove, and then I just have to make music and write a new song. Also let your emotions lead the way when you produce or write – music is about emotions so you can't make a good song trying to be only rational.

What is your best tip for those who struggle with finishing their tracks?

Feel the music and get it done immediately. Perfect is not when there's nothing more to add to it, it's when there's nothing more to be taken away.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

My goal is to put together, produce and release my first Boombap Vinyl Album. I'm planning on some great features of underground as well as more established artists and the magic is already in the making!
