Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hi, I'm a bedroom producer who goes by the stage name sqrl (pronounced squirrel) and I offer all the beats I make for free with production credits. My name stands for Songs Question Reality's Lesson and is inspired from the time I spent in Marching Band in High School. I was out on a trip with the band somewhere and I don't quite remember why, but I decided that I really wanted to touch one of the squirrels that was running around. So this inspired me to chased one around for a bit until it ran up the side of a large building. I then decided to climb up the side of that building, in front of everyone, and touch the squirrel. I did this and for the rest of my high school marching band practices, people would turn to me and exclaim, "Squirrel!" like one would to a dog, and I'd frantically look around for one for a bit. Yeah, I'm kinda weird, and oddly fascinated with squirrels.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

So yeah, my taste in music has changed quite a lot over time. When I was young, I listened to a lot of hard rock and alternative music, including Tool, Linkin Park, Thousand Foot Krutch, Korn, and Skillet. Sometime during my middle school days I got really into Festival Trap and Dubstep, including Bro Safari, Skrillex, and ETC!ETC!. These artists actually influenced me to start producing music. In High School I started to appreciate Rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Drake, G-Eazy, A$AP Rocky, and I developed a strong connection with MOD SUN. I also started to listen to many more subgenres of EDM, including artists such as Pretty Lights, Zeds Dead, Beats Antique, and deadmau5. Once I got to College my musical taste really started to grow. One of my close friends introduced me to artists who greatly influence me to this day, such as Mr. Carmack, RL Grime, TroyBoi, Mura Masa, Kaytranada, Oshi, and my favorite radio show Soulection. From there I got into artists, whom I gain most of my inspiration from today, such as DILIP, COSMIC, annie (a.k.a. inimicvs), Roshima, Lege Kale, Mathaius Young, anderson .paak, Smino, Masego, Night Lovell, and downtime.

What´s new right now?

I'm currently working on a few new beats that I'll be releasing soon, so go follow me on my SoundCloud account to get all of my most up-to-date content. I have a few collaborations with other producers and rappers that are currently being worked on, so be on the look out for those to drop. Whenever I post a new beat, I also post about the release on my instagram account, where I occasionally post videos of beats I'm working on as well. I also recently started a YouTube account where I post visuals I create of my beats.

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

I never really learned or knew how stereo separation/panning worked, but once I started using it my mixes became a lot better. Put a stereo separator on every sound in your track and separate your sounds by putting some in stereo, and others in mono (make sure your 808, kick, and snare are in mono).

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

YouTube tutorials are a very nice source for improving your production skills. Also, try out combining different sounds from different genres to experiment with your creativity. Most recently I've been mixing lofi samples with hip hop and trap inspired instruments, for example.
