SUNSKYN

Read the SUNSKYN Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

My name is Nkosilathi Ndebele, I am a DJ and electronic music artist who specializes in house music. I tend to make more music than DJ at gigs. I currently am signed under the label DuoBoxRecords, a fairly new enterprise to be honest. I was one of the first artists they signed. I release my tracks under the alias of SUNSKYN and I perform under that alias as well.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

The way my focus has changed throughout my career encapsulates the different influences that have impacted me over the years. I started out, funnily enough, as a two man rap group named PROMATIK. I would say that was influenced by those "old-school" hip hop rappers like Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, and the rest. In general though hip hop was a big influence when I started out making music. That changed when I was about 15 or 16, I started listening to artists such as Blasterjaxx, Basshunter, Swedish House Mafia, Firebeatz, Showtek and this was before Martin Garrix was a begin thing so I guess the young me thought I was being "alt" if you will but around that time I definitely started getting more involved into the electronic music scene. Since then I have just been exploring the many different genres that it has to offer and my taste in music is always in flux and continuously changes which I think really helps with my music.

What´s new right now?

At the moment I am really just starting from scratch with a new sound. I have no new releases in the pipeline but I have three projects that I am so excited about that are finished and should be coming along the way in 2018. As well as starting a You tube page with a crew to help me with the music videos I feel like this year I am really going to up the social media presence. This also includes expanding my fan-base into a place where I feel I have fans who understand that my music will constantly be changing, In terms of gigs I have a few things planned for this year with my friends at Triadent and I really cannot wait for what we have in store for everyone.

Are you a superfan of anyone? How did you become a superfan? Do you remember how you become a fan and what turned you into super fan? Have you ever thought about why you´re such a fan?

What was the biggest mistake you made when you started making music and what would be the number one tip you could give to a newcomer musician?

The biggest mistake I made was getting all this cool "production" software but not actually knowing how to use 90 percent of it. I would say learn the basics of the standard stuff then explore your options once you understand what you are looking.

What has been your biggest challenge right now? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

The biggest challenge for me at the moment would have to be time. Given the amount of time I need to spend on my studies and other extra curricular activities in college, it seems i never have time to really get down and work on my projects properly unless its a break or holiday, this can be inconvenient because of how tired I would be at this stage. So far I have just been trying to slowly pick away at the work in my spare time but I find that setting specific time slots for when I want to work and meeting those goals helps to overcome my time constraints.

What is your number one tip to improve your music production or songwriting skills?

Know what music you want to make and love making that music. Once you love it learning the skills will be easy and then the old cliche of practice, practice, practice will be an afterthought because you will be doing it 24/7. Improve by watching the artists who make that genre and learn from their how to videos that are quite literally everywhere these days.

We meet again in one year. What has changed?

I honestly do not know and I think that's what really pushes me forward, rather than having everything cemented and on a pre destined path my career as an artist can change and evolve to suit me and where my life is going. I do however want to be releasing more songs and having a bigger pool of fans to share my music with. If you held a gun to my head I would have to say in a year I just hope to be making new and exciting music for a larger group of fans who understand were I'm coming from. However whatever the year holds I hope it has more ups than downs.
