Zandy [Unorthodox Records]

Read the Zandy [Unorthodox Records] Interview below and share it on social media.

Please tell our readers who you are and what you do?

Hello, I'm Zandy, coming out of my self-made label, Unorthodox Records. I am a rapper/producer sitting back in the deepest reaches of the underground, and I'm currently working on a 7-track mixtape/EP titled 'Solitude Is A Womb'. It's a collaborative effort with fellow label co-founder and producer, Greezy. I released a single called '1929' a few days back that will be on the tape. I will post the link to that on my SoundCloud below. I started casually rapping and producing in 2016 just to see what would come out of it. Initially, it was a powerful outlet to get things off of my chest that I was going through at the time, but I quickly fell in love with the art form as I continued to see my potential come into fruition. I found it to be an adequate canvas for the ideas and feelings that I could never quite express to those around me, as the nature of my psyche has a tendency to be quite esoteric and akin to my personal experience and outtake on life. There is no hyperbolization intended with that statement; I truly process emotions and my senses differently than most due to having high functioning autism. School was an absolute nightmare for me. Not only was I bullied frequently, but being in a classroom with that much going on at once made it nigh impossible for me to pay attention or learn at all. It was really frustrating because none of the material I was presented with actually challenged me, but when it came time to taking a test, it was mostly a guessing game unless it was a subject I truly loved and would study on my free-time when I couldn't be bothered. Free time was basically non-existent though, as I was in both band and choir, involved in many after-school programs, and held a quite serious relationship with a girl whom I absolutely adored. This brought on massive self-hatred, as I thought this was happening because I was stupid. I didn't find out that I was on the spectrum until after I dropped out of my first year of college, but was relieved to know that none of this had happened because I was stupid. Shortly after dropping out, I lost the love of my life through miscommunication and misunderstanding of my situation, and I had simply outgrown her mentally and emotionally, which became devastating to me in the latter years we spent together. All in all, it was quite for the best, as I could no longer be comfortable with someone who would express her massive dislikes about her friends, etc., and then turn right back around on me and act like I was the issue when I became upset with her inconsistent behavior. It's sad to me that she outgrew those friends completely and still chose to stick with them out of complacency. She has high potential as a person, but I'm afraid that may go untapped through her whole life if she stays on her current path. Anyway, through all of this, I had multiple suicide attempts, my brain practically stopped working due to severe depression/anxiety, and the whole nine-yards. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy, however, the wound is where the light enters. I am who I am because of my past, and I appreciate life on a soul level now. I now use this alias, Zandy, to produce landscapes that sonically and lyrically promote the fact that it is absolutely healthy to express any and all emotions, so long as it brings no intentional harm physically/mentally to those around you. We are humans, not mannequins to be adorned by ego-ridden, pretentious clones. I continue to embrace myself as a multi-faceted and non-linear being in hopes to set an example for others that may still be struggling in life. I seek collective awakening to the fact that we, as the human race belonging to this universe, are one continuously repeating fractal made up of smaller, wholly identical fractals that energetically stem to the very origins of existence. We have a responsibility as people to explore the unknown and to shed light and consciousness on the darkness in our own lives, so we can again restore the natural bond of love. Kindness, compassion, empathy, encouragement, and hopefully the joy that precedes from that, is what will liberate this planet.

How would you describe your influences and how have they changed over the years?

I listen to all types of music ranging from metal, jazz, avant-garde, folk, bluegrass; the list is lengthy. I try not to get too caught up one specific influence, for the fact that I'm always evolving and changing as a human. I never quite know how I will feel on any given day, and quite frankly, every day I wake up feeling a little differently that the last. I would say that metal is my biggest influence when it comes to this project. Specifically, and mainly, technical death, black, progressive, and doom metal. I play lead guitar in a Technical/Progressive Doom-Death band with jazz/folk influences as well, so that is always fresh in my mind. I compose practically everything in that project, and we're a good chunk of the way through our first EP, 'Profound Nature'. I won't go too in depth about my band, but I figured I'd mention it because it's a large part of my life. I'd like to give a massive shout-out to my Father, as he was my biggest influence and inspiration in my taste and pursuit of music. He got me into practically everything from a very ripe age, and also listening to him play his trumpet helped me understand that music isn't just a bunch of math and notes thrown together on a page. The analytical/theoretical aspect of it is more like a tool to tap into the emotional aspect of our higher selves. Sure, I study it independently and it comes as second-nature to me, but all of it is useless without the vision and story-telling capability behind all of that, so to speak. Outside of musical influence, I enjoy studying the occult, seeking higher spiritual understanding, and helping those in need. You can definitely expect these themes to be quite prevalent in 'Solitude Is A Womb'. Release date is still tba, but all of the beats are practically done. I am in the stage of writing lyrics now, and will be recording, mixing, and mastering soon.

What´s new right now?

Unorthodox Records is currently in the beginning stages, so we're looking for rappers/producers to join us strictly for the love of pushing art and keeping the movement on the right path. There is no catch, or contract, as we don't believe in anything but the love for the craft. Besides, being as underground as we are, the producers and I understand the nature of the struggle and would much rather have other artists keep a roof over their head and a meal on their plate if they were to join our team. I'm currently in contact with another rapper/producer (whose name I will not mention yet) that has expressed some interest in us. I'm excited to get to know him a bit more, and already have quickly become a fan of his music. In regards to my tape with Greezy, we're looking out for a spring release, but won't set a specific-date until we near the final mixing stages. We would like to eventually play some shows, but will figure that out once we have some more music out. I will be posting a link to each producer's, as well as the Unorthodox Records Instagram in the links down below. Thank you for your time. I had a lot of fun.
